STANEGATE
Stanegate Stoves and Cookers in the Newcastle outskirts of Lemington
is based in a very strange location, it is in a 215yr old glassworks
close to the Tyne.
In 1787 when the Glassworks was built, an Act of Parliament had
just allowed glass to be made on Tyneside using plentiful local
coal. The Duke of Northumberland provided land and the Northumberland
Glass Company was established. It immediately started building the
cone - new technology in 1780 which was designed to draw air from
underground tunnels to raise the temperature of the glass to 2000°C.
The 130ft high tower was made from 1.8 million bricks, each course
slightly offset from the other to make the characteristic cone that
has dominated the Tyne banks for so long.
Kengas was looking for another showroom in the Newcastle area,
when the listed building was noticed, and agreed to lease it. The
4000+ sq ft of space means that it has more than enough room to
display a wide range of stoves, as well as a dedicated area for
range cookers. With 20 live flues and the old kiln bays forming
ideal locations for many working displays, Stanegate Stoves and
Cookers really is a unique environment to view stoves. There are
nearly 100 models on display from most of the major brands, with
an area also for contemporary models. There is space to stand back
and look at the stoves and with so many working models, normally
the effect from a particular design can be demonstrated alight and
working.
The name Stanegate was chosen because it was the old road linking
the west side of Newcastle with Carlisle. The road existed before
Hadrian's Wall, and can still be seen in places along its cross
country route.
With a location conveniently just of the A1, a historic location,
and an extensive range Stanegate Stoves and Cookers is a must for
any buyer in the North East.
